The scholars and the ordinary folk have worked out a clever partnership arrangement. A more fitting description of the partnership should be that it “evolved” over the centuries. The scholars will be elevated and adorned with glorious and pious religious robes, from where they will issue their religious edicts, claiming to speak for God. In return for receiving this noble station, they will issue religious edicts that make religion bearable and doable for the ordinary folks down there. Over the centuries, these two social forces have developed a symbiotic, co-dependent existence. The priests offer religious practices that the masses can live with, and promise God’s paradise in return. The masses offer the priests sanctified status, in return for moral absolution. The trick however lies in finding the balance. If priests make it too easy on people, those ordinary folks will assimilate into the general mass of humanity. That of course [Read further…]

Muslims (and Jews) have been rather unfair in their portrayal of Christianity. They have been very quick to label Christianity as equivalent to idolatry, polytheism and blaspheming pure monotheistic faith. Further charges against Christian belief is that it proclaims Jesus as the physically begotten son of God with all the base connotations associated with that claim. Further accusations against Christianity is that it has willfully corrupted the Gospel as the revealed word of God, and that it has twisted the message brought by Jesus Christ. Sustaining these accusations require a great deal of implied assertions then. Some of these are the following: (1) Over a billion people today are simply too ignorant to see through the lies and fabrications (2) 20 Centuries of Christians have maintained an oblivious lie (3) God has withheld his guidance from generations upon generations of Christians. We need to remember that Christianity was successful in [Read further…]

What Happened to Jesus Christ? All three major Abrahamic traditions offer conflicting versions of the story of Jesus Christ’s final days on this earth. Christian Belief… Christians hold the view that Jesus was the miraculously conceived son of Mary, who commenced a mission of calling to the worship of God, the Father, upon which he found grave opposition from the existing Jewish religious authorities, eventually to be crucified under their instigation by the Roman political authorities.  Finally, Christians hold, Jesus was miraculously resurrected by God, the Father on the third day after his crucifixion.  The Christian worldview places the death by crucifixion, and Jesus’ resurrection from death at the very centre.  Jesus’ sacrificial death and miraculous coming back to life are the proofs of God’s love for humanity and the proof of Jesus’ deity.  God exists in three persons, God the son, The Holy Spirit and God the Father. Jewish [Read further…]

By Ibrahimi Qurani, www.ahl-alquran.com The topic of this article is intentionally provocative. Despite that provocativeness this article will ask tough and constructive questions. The criticism is aimed at changing the mental perspective of Muslims and orienting this perspective towards a more successful outlook. If Muslims can come to grasp with the truths that will be laid out below, I believe the status, reputation and spiritual strength of all Muslims will see a great rise. I don’t mean to be a fault finder but truth is truth. It is only through recognizing our faults and understanding that they are bad that we can begin to make any real progress. Traditional Islam: Traditional Islam is just plain old bad. There is no reason why a Muslim should call him or herself a Muslim just because his or her parents, grandparents or entire nation claims Islam. This leads to Muslims who have not [Read further…]

My humble proposal is that Truth, or that which is good, correct, real and wholesome for the involuntary actions of human beings, does not necessarily require a champion.  What in fact requires a champion, an activist, an intervener or an agent is the eradication of falsehood. By falsehood, I mean those actions and beliefs that are false or harmful.  At best, Truth requires a confirmer.  This is exactly the role of the Prophets of God, upon whom be peace.  Look at this verse from the holy scriptures:   Surah Fatir, Verse 31: وَالَّذِي أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ هُوَ الْحَقُّ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بِعِبَادِهِ لَخَبِيرٌ بَصِيرٌ “That which We have revealed to thee of the Book is the Truth,- confirming what is in front of it, for Allah is assuredly- with respect to His Servants – well acquainted and Fully Observant.” Most translators of the arabic have interpreted [Read further…]

PICKTHAL: Nothing of our revelation (even a single verse) do we abrogate or cause be forgotten, but we bring (in place) one better or the like thereof. Knowest thou not that Allah is Able to do all things? (Qur’an 2:106) Depending on which translation of the Qur’an is being read, the most common rendering of verse 2:106, as can be seen above in the translation of Pickthal, is that the Qur’an is subject to “abrogation”, and, in some special cases, is even subject to verses being lost/forgotten altogether! On the face of it, this seems like a very peculiar statement that God would make, especially when the Almighty has asserted time and time again in the very same Book that the Qur’an is “complete, detailed, does not run out of words, cannot be changed, etc.” 6:115 And the word of your Lord has been completed with truth and justice; there [Read further…]

The main reason why people follow thousands of narrations (hadith), compiled by fallible men, over two centuries after the final Prophet is because they believe that the Qur’an does not answer all their needs.  Their argument is: “Without Sahih Bukhari etc. we will not know how to make salaah”,  etc etc. etc. What does Allah say? Quran 29:51 “Is it not sufficient for them that We have sent down to you the Book (the Quran) which is recited to them? Verily, herein is mercy and a reminder (or an admonition) for a people who believe.” Which part of the words of Allah do they NOT understand??? Bukhari, Muslim etc. CANNOT OVERRIDE AL-QURAN!! The author of Bukhari is Bukhari, and not the Prophet. Will you prefer to follow Bukhari then instead of the Quran? Bukhari calls for [Read further…]

I have forever pondered over this, and feel the need to constantly re-evaluate the basis for my beliefs. Although I have acquired philosophical and rational justifications for my present beliefs, I used to believe for very practical reasons.  Let me share some of those practical reasons, and how they gradually lost all validity for me. The number one reason I always followed that which I followed is because I wanted to fit in.  As a child, I am taught the ways of my parents, my uncles and my siblings, and thus observing their rituals and beliefs makes me fit in.  I grew up in a community where the Muslims were a small minority within a larger Christian society.  This meant that the Muslim family had to really establish a very strong attachment to its beliefs to prevent children from growing up and becoming assimilated into the larger Christian community, and [Read further…]

The standard premise that atheism rests on is the absence of evidence for the existence of God or a god.  Oxfordictionaries.com gives the meaning of the word atheism as “Disbelief or lack of belief in the existence of God or gods.”  Let’s define the word “god” or “deity”.  The same site defines god as follows: “a superhuman being or spirit worshipped as having power over nature or human fortunes; a deity.” The operative words here, if we ignore the nature or corporeal make-up of “god” would be the words “having power over nature or human fortunes.”  Atheists certainly have no qualm with the existence of entities that possess immense power to affect nature and the fortunes of people.  The only problem they have is that a “superhuman being or spirit” should possess such powers.  We can therefore expand on the definition of an atheist as one who “disregards the existence [Read further…]

Oh!  Supreme Lover! Let me leave aside my worries. The flowers are blooming  with the exultation of your Spirit. By Allah! I long to escape the prison of my ego and lose myself in the mountains and the desert. These sad and lonely people tire me. I long to revel in the drunken frenzy of your love and feel the strength of Rustam in my hands. I’m sick of mortal kings. I long to see your light. With lamps in hand the sheikhs and mullahs roam the dark alleys of these towns not finding what they seek. You are the Essence of the Essence, The intoxication of Love. I long to sing your praises but stand mute with the agony of wishing in my heart. [Rumi – ‘The Love Poems of Rumi’]

Love of God means love for Humanity and Hatred of Oppressors

Why must I share my love for the Divine? Don’t they see He’s my warm sunshine? Shall I then forsake His light, alone, Cold, bereft, only darkness, unknown! For death in His cause, I longingly yearn A chance for me to, unto Him return. And when all this noise is gone one day, In His noble company shall I forever stay.
