The Apostle Paul is the author of about half of the New Testament.  The vast bulk of Christian orthodox beliefs can be traced back to the interpretations and the teachings of the apostle Paul.  Paul however never met Jesus during the  pre-crucifixion period.  He is said to have converted from being a persecutor of Christians to becoming a noble defender of Christianity and saint, after undergoing a grand epiphany.  His conversion was occasioned by his vision of the Holy Spirit, a year or so after the crucifixion, who spoke to him and set him on his Christian path.  An enormous amount of authority is given to Paul as a shaper of Christianity in its current form.  From the words of modern Christian apologist such as William Lane Craig, it seems that the inerrancy and authority of Paul is entirely ascribed to his noble conversion story.  It is argued that Paul proved his honesty and his integrity by having forfeited his standing in the Roman state, when he professed his acceptance of Christ.  He traded a position of respect and honour for persecution and dissidence.  Surely, as the argument goes, nothing but true faith could have spurred him to make such a sacrifice.  Paul, after his conversion, became a marked man, living a life of hiding from the authorities. What sane person, it is argued, would trade freedom and power, for dissidence and persecution, unless he truly believed in his cause?

Now let us list the key elements of Paul’s scenario:

1.  Never met Jesus prior to the crucifixion.

2.  Starts out as a persecutor of Christians, in good standing with the authorities.

3.  Has a miraculous vision of the Holy Spirit, which transforms him

4.  Commences a life of preaching

5.  Suffers life-long persecution by the civil authorities for his teachings.

Now let us look at the scenario of Muhammad’s apostleship:

1.  Never met Jesus prior to the crucifixion.

2.  Starts out as an honest trader and citizen of Mecca, in good standing with the authorities.

3.  Has a miraculous vision of the Holy Spirit, which transforms him

4.  Commences a life of preaching

5.  Suffers life-long persecution by the civil authorities for his teachings.

The scenario’s are the same except for (2).  Muhammad led a respectable life as an honest trader and family man, whereas Paul was a persecutor of Christians.

Roughly two billion people in the world today accept and embrace the one scenario, while roughly two billion accept and embrace the other.  Each group shapes its deepest and most sacred beliefs around either of the two scenarios.

This forces us to look at the core teachings of each of these two revered figures.  Let us tabulate them.

Paul

Muhammad

1.     1.  Jesus Christ is the Messiah of God

Jesus Christ is the Messiah of God

2.      2. Jesus was miraculously conceived by the virgin Mary

Jesus was miraculously conceived by the virgin Mary

3.      3. Jesus was crucified, as a symbolic atonement for the sins of all of mankind

Jesus was spared the humiliation of crucifixion, and each man must atone for his own sins

4.      4. Visions of Jesus after the crucifixion indicate that he was raised from the dead as a proof of his divine nature

Visions of Jesus after the crucifixion indicate that he survived all attempts on his life, and continued his preaching

5.      5.  Jesus was raised up to heaven

Jesus was raised up to heaven

6.      6.  Jesus is the eternal son of God, who shares the divine station with God the Father.

Jesus represents the word and the spirit of God, sharing the company of God.

7.      7. The Divine Godhead is a Trinity, composed of The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost

The divine Godhead is a pure unity, and Jesus is the figurative Son of God, His instrument and His medium and messenger.

In the end, we have to use our intellect to evaluate the two sets of preachings. They differ in (3), (4), (6) and (7).  Paul’s teachings demand of us to accept as rational, the following:

1.  That a person who died, after having his heart pierced by a Roman spear, regained the ability to regenerate physiological life functions

2.  That God inflicted suffering on his most beloved, in order to expiate the sins of every sinner, oppressor and dictator from the beginning of time to the end of time.

3.  That the divine Godhead has three distinct personalities, who although they have three different wills, really represent one will.

If we clear ourselves of any predisposition, it must be said that Muhammad demands less of a stretch of our rational faculties.

Mark Shuttleworth, the first South African in space and the mastermind behind the Ubuntu open source PC desktop interface, and Bill Gates, the spirit behind the Windows operating system are both great men.  So is Steve Jobs, the spirit behind Apple.  Using Ubuntu, or using Windows or using Apple does not make anyone a great person automatically!  In fact, using any of these, does not even make me an authority on the software.  As a user, I’m a beneficiary of someone else’s greatness.  I should be grateful, humble and hopeful that I could be of similar great service to my fellow man one day.

Not so with religions! Muhammad, Jesus and Moses were great men.  However we see their followers arrogating themselves to absurdly sublime levels, rivaling the very authority of the original master.  What gives a Muslim follower of Muhammad the right to speak in Muhammad’s name?  Who gave any scholar of Islam the right to arrogantly speak for God or Muhammad?  What gives any Shi’ite cleric the right to dress up in garbs and pretend to speak for Ali?  The madness grows to viscous insanity when these imposters and usurpers then violently impose their half-baked understanding on the rest of us.

Priesthood is to be found in all religions, and is a scourge and a curse on religion.   In Christianity, priesthood, though still wrong, has thankfully taken on a more benign form in recent years.  Muslims, both Sunni and Shia, have sadly become the victims of a malignant, virile and violent priesthood.  Islam should be renamed Blackmail.  Muslims are coerced and blackmailed by their ignorant priests, into obeisance, not to Muhammad and God, but of their priests.  God and Muhammad are only their invocations.   Politically, Muslims’ priests use them as collective hysterical mob with which to intimidate the West.   The pulpit has become a place of intimidation and threats.  A cacophony of threats are issued there every Friday:  Threat of Hell, threat of being declared a sinner, threat of being declared “Kaafir”, or apostate, threat of excommunication and more.  Threats, threats, threats.  Can Islam then not securely rest on sound intellectual foundations?  Any belief system that needs blackmail and threats to survive is a false system.

The failure of the followers should not detract from the greatness of the master.  When Christians invent absurd stories about Jesus that defy every iota of common sense in us, we should not blame the master Jesus.  Can we blame Bill Gates if a malicious piece of software invades our Windows PC, and renders it useless?  What if a malicious piece of software invades and infects 90% of the world’s Windows PC’s ?

In the end, we are all individually accountable for our beliefs and our actions. God aids us and intervenes through our magnificent intellect.  Neither the holy Bible, or the noble Quran and nor the great Torah addresses a priestly class.  They all address you and me directly.  Yes, often the message espoused in our holy books is cryptic.  For that purpose you and me were given a most noble decryption tool, namely our intellect.  Through applying our intellect individually and collectively, we can receive sound guidance from the scriptures.

Surah At-Taubah, Verse 31 speaks eloquently on this topic:

اتَّخَذُوا أَحْبَارَهُمْ وَرُهْبَانَهُمْ أَرْبَابًا مِّن دُونِ اللَّهِ

“They take their priests and their anchorites to be their lords in derogation of Allah…”

That is not to say that we reject the validity of expertise and leadership.  Experts and Leaders are boons to society. Experts offer insight, understanding and wisdom.  Leaders offer inspiration and coherence.  Leaders and experts are our allies in the collective quest to improve our condition.

A god that does nothing to ease our difficult way through this world is an uncaring god. But where can we find the grace and solace of God when we are in difficulty? Every day, we face hundreds of decisions and every so now and then we face a challenge that completely disturbs our soul’s natural balance. Is God prepared to sense my burden and sympathize; possibly even intervene? I sought the face of God through all my difficulties, and found him sadly absent, until now. But it was not a magical spiritual sensation that I sensed Him with. It was not a magnificent and magic vision, and nor was it through the eyes of a saintly person.

God lives, and manifests His will, His guidance, His solace and His comfort every day, every moment, throughout history to each of us, through a divine gift we all receive at birth. A gift so powerful that we, collectively as humanity, by applying this gift, have manifested magnificent grandeur in our collective and individual existences.

The MIND of man, is the very intervention of God!  The seat of intellect, consciousness and free will.  Though a few pounds in weight, and unimpressive when looked at, the brain of man is the most complex structure in the entire universe.  It remains unfathomably powerful and far beyond any scientific explanation still.  The mind remains the most unique attribute of any created or evolved life form.

In our own precious mind, lies the answer to almost every challenge. No angel and no saint is needed. When we sincerely apply our mind, individually and collectively to the challenges that faces us, we summon and invoke the very power of God!

Why does it then not happen? Why do we then still fail so often. The obstacles to the supremacy of pure intellect, are the base, retrogressive effects of our ego. When Ego trumps Mind, we are left without the precious intervention of God.

If we make the assumption that God is a myth and a figment in the minds of men and women, then we need to ask some hard questions, which will yield some scary answers.

So, question 1: If there is no divine and eternal God and laws, who then says what’s right and what’s wrong?
Answer: The government.

Question 2: Who tells the government what’s right and wrong?
Answer: We, the people.

Question 3: So I say what’s right and wrong?
Answer: Yes, as long as it conforms generally to what others say is right or wrong.

Question 4: You mean my wishes are subject to the wishes of the rest of society?
Answer: No, not really, it just means that what you wish for is not allowed to harm or encroach on anyone else’s wish.

Question 5: Who decides when my wishes have the effect of encroaching on someone else?
Answer: The court, which is made up of independent wise men and women.

Question 6: So the court is pretty much in control?
Answer: No, you can challenge the court.

Question 7: Really?
Answer: Yes, as long as you can afford the costs of doing so.

Question 8: So if I can afford it, I can challenge and reverse a court decision?
Answer: Yes, unless, someone else challenges the court’s decision, and can afford to overturn your position.

Question: So a court decision can be challenged forever and ever?
Answer: No, only for as long as both parties have the money to do so.

Question: So whoever runs out of cash first looses?
Answer: In practice that’s the case yes.

Question: So the richest guy really wins the court battle?
Answer: In practice, yes.

Question: That means the richest guy gets to say what’s in everyone’s best interest?
Answer: Yep, can’t argue with that.

Question: That means the richest guy says what’s wrong or right?
Answer: Looks that way.

Question: That means the richest guy is in charge?
Answer: MMM

Question: Are the richest guys in your society fair and just at least? Are they concerned or compassionate about those who are poorer?
Answer: They say they are.

Question: Does it look like they care ?
Answer: Well look around you, and watch the news, and see for yourself.

A non sequitur is defined as an argument in which there is no connection between the premise of the argument and its conclusion.

I am trying to faithfully and honestly summarise the arguments of Atheists. If you read their books and watch their Youtube videos, you will be able to verify these common arguments.

The top 5 fallacious non-sequiturs constantly used by neo-atheists like Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens and Michael Schermer are…

FALLACY NUMBER 1
“There is great suffering in the world, and God is defined as a kind loving being by religion, that is why the kind and loving God of Abrahamic religions does not exist.” My response: How can suffering imply lack of love and mercy? I love my wife, and I was responsible for my wife painfully and with much torture bearing three children. That does not mean that my act of fathering these children was out of a lack of love! Furthermore, the fact that my own dad punished me once when I almost burnt the house down, certainly does not make him devoid of love and compassion. The argument of the Atheist is funny because it seems to say: “God does not exist because I think he is cruel.”

FALLACY NUMBER 2
“People invented God to explain their lack of understanding and knowledge.” Atheists often refer to God as the “God of the Gaps”. The argument goes like this: “As soon as Science can explain a phenomenon, God does not need to exist as the causer of that phenomenon. One of the few gaps that still exists is the origin of the universe, and science will explain that too in the future, which will finally eliminate all reason for God to exist.” This is like me saying, I know how the engine of my car works, that’s why no-one built it. But even when looking at the origination of a phenomenon, like say, thunder, will it be hard for atheist to base their rejection of God on the fact that we can explain the origin of thunder. What if the God we believe in creates by a process of evolving things through scientifically explainable processes? Furthermore even: What if God gives rise to things by delegating the power to create them to humans?

FALLACY NUMBER 3
“God is not needed for humans to be moral because I (as an Atheist) don’t believe in God and I am moral “. Classical non sequitur. Lets apply the reasoning in another context to expose this fallacy: “Working is not needed to make a living, because I don’t work, and I’m making a pretty good living.” The concept “work” here is not argued as a specific virtue, but as a general virtue.

FALLACY NUMBER 4
“There is no evidence of God, and therefore I cannot support the hypothesis that God exists.” The argument would be sound here still, but then the neo-atheist moves on to a de facto position that “God does therefore not exist.” The argument of “no evidence” can at most be employed to support Agnosticism (i.e. being uncertain whether God exists), and not total rejection of God. The Atheists argument that all existence only happens when it is empirically verified, leads to absurd implication that nothing exists that is not smelt, felt, heard, seen or sensed by anyone. Does that mean Black Holes don’t exist then? Or does that mean that electrons and quarks did not exist before physicists could detect them?

FALLACY NUMBER 5
“Atheism promotes human progress because it places the responsibility on man to shape his own destiny instead of invoking God and prayer all the time.” Another way in which this fallacy is promoted is by neo-Atheists often acting as de facto spokesmen for science. The common pattern of their reasoning is that Atheism=Scientific progress and religion=backwardness. Firstly, the scientific community has never taken a formal or unanimous position on the existence of God. As far as I know, no science faculty or institute has ever endorsed study into whether God exists. This makes the assertion by Dawkins to speak for “Science” just a fallacy. Mr Dawkins, like any other atheist who happens to be a scientist, is an atheist in spite of being a scientist, not because he is a scientist.

Now if you are an Atheist, you are going to accuse me of also making unproven assertions above, like say, that God exists. You should remember however that my piece here is not meant to prove anything, merely to expose the fallacies in the arguments of neo-Atheists. Read the book “Our Godly Struggle” downloadable on this site to find the positive arguments.

Imam Ali answers in  a saying…ِ

“Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘A delay in response should not dishearten you, for verily the grant [from God] is proportional to [the sincerity of] your intention, and maybe the response has been delayed in order for it to be a greater reward for the one who asked and a greater bestowal for the hopeful one, or maybe you asked for something and it was not given to you and instead you are to be granted something better sooner or later, or it may have been kept away from you for your own good, for many a matter that you ask for would be detrimental to your religion [and faith] if it were to be given to you.’ ”

Hast thou not Turned thy vision to the Chiefs of the Children of Israel after (the time of) Moses? they said to a prophet (That was) among them: “Appoint for us a king, that we May fight in the cause of Allah.” He said: “Is it not possible, if ye were commanded to fight, that that ye will not fight?” They said: “How could we refuse to fight in the cause of Allah, seeing that we were turned out of our homes and our families?” but when they were commanded to fight, they turned back, except a small band among them. But Allah Has full knowledge of those who do wrong.

Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers (in fight), smite at their necks; At length, when ye have thoroughly subdued them, bind a bond firmly (on them): thereafter (is the time for) either generosity or ransom: Until the war lays down its burdens. Thus (are ye commanded): but if it had been Allah’s Will, He could certainly have exacted retribution from them (Himself); but (He lets you fight) in order to test you, some with others. But those who are slain in the Way of Allah,- He will never let their deeds be lost.

They think that the Confederates have not withdrawn; and if the Confederates should come (again), they would wish they were in the deserts (wandering) among the Bedouins, and seeking news about you (from a safe distance); and if they were in your midst, they would fight but little.

Allah hath purchased of the believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the garden (of Paradise): they fight in His cause, and slay and are slain: a promise binding on Him in truth, through the Law, the Gospel, and the Qur’an: and who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? then rejoice in the bargain which ye have concluded: that is the achievement supreme.

Downing Street defends visit to secretive group, where prime minister will not be accompanied by civil servants.

David Cameron is to attend the secretive Bilderberg group at the luxury Grove hotel in Watford on Friday evening, in a move that is likely to raise questions about his pledge to lead Britain’s most transparent government.

Downing Street said it was acting in an open manner by publicising the prime minister’s attendance in advance.

The PM’s spokesman, who said heads of government of countries hosting the annual Bilderberg meeting were usually invited to attend, said it would be a private event and that civil servants were not expected to attend.

No 10 is to clarify the position because ministers are usually expected to be accompanied by civil service note-takers when they meet business leaders. Henri de Castries, the chairman and CEO of the AXA Group, is the Bilderberg chairman.

The PM’s spokesman said: “He will participate in a discussion around domestic and global economic issues. He feels it is an opportunity to discuss economic issues with senior ministers, businesspeople and academics.”

Downing Street said that it would not publicise any details of the prime minister’s meetings. “It is a private meeting so we are not going to go into any further details,” the spokesman said.

“On a wider point the prime minister has always been clear about the importance of transparency which is why this government has taken a number of steps in terms of publishing more data, more information about meetings.”

The ministerial code, published by the government in September 2010, said that “external meetings” held by ministers would be published on a quarterly basis. It says: “Ministers meet many people and organisations and consider a wide range of views as part of the formulation of government policy. Departments will publish, at least quarterly, details of ministers’ external meetings.”

Cameron and Nick Clegg pledged when they formed the coalition to lead the most transparent government to date. The coalition agreement said: “The government believes that we need to throw open the doors of public bodies, to enable the public to hold politicians and public bodies to account.”

No 10 said it did not believe that civil servants would accompany the prime minister. Asked whether he would be accompanied by officials, the PM’s spokesman said: “I am not aware of any officials going. But I am happy to double check.”

Cameron’s attendance at the meeting brings to three the number of British ministers who will attend this year’s Bilderberg group summit. George Osborne is attending and Kenneth Clarke, the former chancellor, is a member of the group’s steering committee.

The Bilderberg group says the costs of the annual meeting are the responsibility of the steering group, whose members include the former Barclays chairman Marcus Agius, the CEO of the defence manufacturer EADS, Thomas Enders, and the Goldman Sachs chairman, Peter Sutherland.

The group says: “There is no detailed agenda, no resolutions are proposed, no votes are taken, and no policy statements are issued.”

Under the mind-bending rules of quantum mechanics, two particles can become entangled so that they retain a connection even when separated over long distances. The properties between the two are correlated so that an action performed on one will affect the other.

To study entangled particles, physicists have to be able to detect them. In some experiments, researchers measure one of the entangled pair first, and its presence signals, or “heralds,” the presence of the second particle. Recently, a team of physicists at the Joint Quantum Institute in College Park, Md., achieved a new record in heralding efficiency, meaning they were able to detect more twin particle pairs than ever before. In the experiment, the researchers used what’s called a pump laser to produce a beam of light that passes through a special type of crystal. Occasionally, the photons of light in the laser beam will split in two, essentially, after passing through the crystal, creating a new pair of correlated photons. These photons will hit a detector screen exactly 180 degrees apart, so if the researchers find one, they know to look directly across the circle pattern formed on the detector, to the point 180 degrees around, to find the other.
